Rafael H. Bordini is presently writing his PhD thesis at the Department of Computer Science, University College London, under the supervision of Prof. John A. Campbell. He has a BSc degree in Computer Science from the Instituto de Informática, Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul (1991), and a MSc degree in Computer Science from the Curso de Pós-Graduação em Ciência da Computação, Instituto de Informática, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (1994) -- both universities are in Porto Alegre-RS, Brazil. His research interests are centred on theoretical aspects of multi-agent systems, in particular agent communication, more recently including aspects of emotions. He has further research interests in the multidisciplinary foundations of multi-agent systems and application of multi-agent system techniques to simulations for the social sciences.

John A. Campbell is a professor of Computer Science at University College London, with special responsibility for research in knowledge-based systems. Within that area, he works on non-standard methods of reasoning (e.g. qualitative, time-critical, case-based), properties of autonomous agents and multi-agent systems (currently with emphasis on negotiation, imperfect communication, boredom, and agents' capabilities for mathematical modelling), the representation and use of mathematical knowledge in artificial intelligence, processing of multilingual text corpora to assist in translation and in knowledge extraction, and applications of knowledge-based systems to broadcast communications. Outside the area, he has research interests in linguistics, theoretical physics, and historical and social policy issues connected with the development of new technologies.

Renata Vieira is a lecturer at the Centre for Social Communication within the Postgraduate Programme on Communication and Semiotics, Universidade do Vale do Rio dos Sinos, São Leopoldo-RS, Brazil, doing research connecting new technologies and cognitive studies of communication and semiotics. She has a PhD in Cognitive Science, from the Centre for Cognitve Science of the University of Edinburgh. Her PhD thesis involved a corpus-based investigation of the use of definite descriptions in English. Her first degree and MSc are in Computer Science, both from the Instituto de Informática, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, Porto Alegre-RS, Brazil.
